St. John’s is the eastern most city in Canada and has served as a major port since long before the country’s existence. Considered to be the oldest city in North America, with John Cabot sailing into her harbour on June 24, 1497, permanent settlement began on the site in 1630. St. John’s is geographically located closer to Dublin, Ireland across the Atlantic than it is to Vancouver, British Columbia across the continent. Culturally, St. John’s shares many cultural similarities with its Irish forebears as many of its residents still identify with their heritage. One of St. John’s best known exports is the iconic folk-rock band, Great Big Sea.

Listed as one of National Geographic’s top 10 coastal cities in the world, there are plenty of scenic drives along the rocky coast line. Stop and gaze out over the ocean and you may be lucky enough to see a whale spout or an iceberg drifting off at sea!

For a better view, you can climb atop the lighthouse at the Cape Spear national historic site. The eastern most location in all of Canada, a lighthouse has been in operation since 1836 making it the second oldest in the province.
